boss is at risk of missing out on a healthy transfer windfall this summer. The club’s injury curse has seemingly expanded overseas, with one of their loaned-out players struck by a major setback which could put an end to his season.

Postecoglou had a good look at Bryan Gil last campaign and decided to send him on loan to Girona during the summer. With the Spaniard approaching the final year of his Spurs contract, the north Londoners are widely expected to part ways with him permanently at the end of the season. And having established himself as a regular at Girona, there were hopes and that the La Liga side were set to activate Gil’s clause.

But things have taken an unfortunate turn for the 24-year-old. A knee injury kept him out of Saturday’s 1-1 draw at home to Valencia, and Girona manager Michel has admitted that his campaign could now be over.

“We will see if surgery is necessary or not,” he said. “If he has to have surgery, he could miss the entire season. It doesn’t look good, although I think tests are still needed.”

Girona have enlisted the help of Dr Ramon Cugat to determine whether Gil will require the season-ending procedure. But in Spain indicate that it will be ‘impossible’ for the loanee to avoid it.

Spurs may have been banking on Girona as the likely buyers for Gil this summer. The winger has enjoyed one of his best seasons as a senior professional, with three goals and three assists in 25 La Liga appearances.

But Gil suffering a serious injury could cause Girona to think twice before committing to a transfer fee which, for them, would be a significant outlay. The chances of Gil finding his way back into Postecoglou’s first team appear remote, given that his record stands at 43 games and zero goals.

Spurs are well-stocked out wide with the likes of Brennan Johnson, Wilson Odobert, Heung-min Son, Richarlison and Mikey Moore already scrapping it out for minutes. Mathys Tel and Dejan Kulusevski can also play on the flanks, while Timo Werner will be in the equation if sign him permanently.

Gil’s setback could put Spurs technical director Johan Lange in a tricky position this summer if it prompts Girona to pass up on their option to buy. signed him from Sevilla in 2021 for plus Erik Lamela, meaning a painful loss is likely coming their way.
