“Bone meal is a great source of phosphorus which helps establish good roots, and without good roots, plants don’t grow as well. This is why I add it to the ground when planting and later when plants are growing. They are always making new roots.”

Bone meal releases nutrients slowly over time, providing hydrangeas with a steady supply of energy while they are growing, so the plant produces even more flowers.

Phosphorus is an essential nutrient that all plants need to grow. It also helps strengthen buds and gives plants a boost during flower production.

It is also a great source of calcium, which helps keep the plant roots healthy so hydrangeas will be able to take in more nutrients and water.

The best time to give hydrangeas bone meal is in spring to ensure the plant has the nutrients it needs during the growing season.

How to feed hydrangeas bone meal

All you need to do is gently work the bone meal into the soil around the base of the hydrangeas. Spead the bone meal in a circle around the plant and gently use a rake to work it into the soil.

However, be careful not to disturb the roots and only apply a small amount of bone meal to hydrangeas, as too much fertiliser will overload the soil and burn the roots.

Typically, you will only need one to two teaspoons of bone meal per hydrangea plant, but read the instructions on the product to be sure.

Pam said, “Once the snow is gone, I sprinkle it around the hydrangea shrub and other perennials in the yard.

“Rake it into the soil and be careful around the shallow roots. Bone meal replaces depleted phosphorus and will get the plants off to a good start for summer growth.”

Once you have fed the plant, make sure to water it. This will help mix the feed into the soil and make it easier for it to be absorbed by the hydrangea roots.

You only need to apply bone meal once or twice a year for hydrangeas to give the benefits. If you are looking to maintain healthy hydrangeas, then feed them bone meal again in late summer, and your garden will be bursting with flowers.
