If you’re a lover of fabric softener when doing your , then it’s highly likely your towels have lost their soft and fluffy nature. Towels often lose their softness if you add fabric softener to the wash as the fabric is extremely absorbent and soap residue will build up in the fibres. While some people prefer their towels stiff, I like them best when soft, especially when it comes to bath towels.

Although is a go-to solution for stripping towels, many enthusiasts have switched to using soda crystals, claiming that it “works better”, and I have to agree. Aside from using soda crystals to soften my towels, I also added in a five-minute task to help fluff them up when drying.

To use soda crystals to soften my towels, I added the towels to a washing up bowl with water and two cups of soda crystals.

I left the towels to sit in this solution for thirty minutes to allow the soda crystals to work their magic. The towels can also be left to soak overnight if they are really bad.

Once the time was up, I wrung out the towels slightly and transferred them to the washing machine and added my regular liquid detergent to the drawer compartment.

Try not to use washing powder when possible, as it is difficult to rinse the powder out of the fibers, making the towel rough.

If you notice that your towels have a musty odour to them, you may want to pair the soda crystals with white vinegar – add this to the fabric softener compartment in the drawer.

I put the towels on to wash on a regular cycle at 40 degrees. Then before taking the towels out of the washing machine, I put them on a 10-minute spin cycle.

Towels drying on airer with dehumidifier

I use the spin cycle after every wash as it helps the laundry dry quicker and helps to avoid musty smells developing.

When taking the towels out of the washing machine, they already felt softer than usual after going through the wash.

After I left the towels to dry on my airer with a dehumidifier to speed up the process. Every 15 minutes I made sure to give the towels a shake to agitate the fibres.

During the last five minutes of drying the towels, I popped them into the tumble dryer on a low heat. This also helps to agitate the fibres, stopping them from sticking together, which resulted in softer towels.
