A 71-year-old man living in the Burnaby woods is in hospital with serious injuries after being shot.
Burnaby RCMP were called to a wooded area near Highway 1 and Willingdon Avenue at about 10:15 p.m. Saturday.
“The injured victim, who appears to have been living in the wooded area, was located and taken to the hospital, where he is continuing to undergo treatment,” said an RCMP spokesperson in a statement.
“While the victim’s injuries appear serious, he is in stable condition.”
A motive has not been determined but police said “it is believed to be an isolated incident.”

Officer-involved shooting in Penticton
B.C.’s independent investigators into police actions causing injury or death are in Penticton after a man was shot by police.
B.C. RCMP Staff Sgt. Kris Clark said the Independent Investigations Office of B.C. (IIO) has been notified about the police-involved shooting, which happened during a traffic stop.
Mounties pulled over an alleged suspect around 4 p.m. Saturday, following reports of someone with a gun.
“Police stopped a vehicle near the intersection of Green Mountain Road and Sumac Court,” said Clark. “The man then ran from the vehicle, which was followed by an interaction with police.”
An officer opened fire and the man was taken to hospital with gunshot injuries.
The IIO will look into “what happened leading up to and during the man’s interaction with police and whether any action taken may have been necessary, reasonable and proportionate,” the oversight agency said in a news release.
When appropriate, it makes recommendations to the B.C. Prosecution Service to decide whether charges are warranted.
