Bruno Fernandes has called for Rasmus Hojlund to go on another scoring drought. The forward ended a 21-match dry spell by netting in the routine 3-0 win over Leicester on Sunday night. However, Hojlund will spearhead Denmark’s attack when they face Fernandes’ Portugal next week – so the United skipper wants the Dane to forget his shooting boots.

“It was very important for us because for strikers it is about scoring goals. They want to score goals and be involvedin the main thing because it is about that for them,” Fernandes said of Hojlund. “They need to feel important and feel they are getting into the scoresheet. The runs and everything he does for the team is important but the feeling is very happy to score goals.

“I am very pleased but I hope for the next two weeks he doesn’t score any more because he is going to play against me in the national team, and then when he gets back he can score goals again.”

Hojlund has come under heavy criticism this season because he has only scored three Premier League goals.

The 21-year-old has looked sharp in recent weeks and believes the international break is coming at the wrong time for his striker.

“A difficult goal with difficult control with his right foot. It’s a shame we stop for the national teams biggest we have confidence,” Amorim said.

Leicester boss Ruud van Nistelrooy, who had a knack of scoring for the visitors, was impressed with United’s attacking threat that was spearheaded by Hojlund.

He said: “I think in both boxes the difference in quality showed. The efficiency in finishing chances, and also defending key moments in the game. Overall if you look at the metrics of the game there’s not much in it. But obviously the efficiency is there.

“We kept pushing and had opportunities to get back into it. Also at 2-0 we had the chance cleared off the line. We had other chances before that. It’s difficult when the ball doesn’t go in.

“That’s what happens, that’s football. You’re in a moment where things don’t go for you but the players are giving everything they have.

“We are not on the outside, we are on the inside. The gap is nine points, it’s big, but we can’t and won’t give up. We’ll keep going and use all the possibilities we have to turn this situation around. Now we’ll have a long break and come back from there.”
