Sitting proudly on the ocean lies a stunning hidden gem city that is a treasure trove of architecture and is a warm 22C in March. Situated below Algiers in Algeria and Tunis in Tunisia is Valletta, the capital city of .

As one of Europe’s smallest cities, it is the ideal  to explore on foot, and it is just a short three-hour plane journey from the UK. But don’t let its size fool you, as there are a wealth of things to do in this tiny capital city. Renowned for its stunning Baroque architecture and narrow winding streets, this capital is also a , thanks to its rich history and beautifully preserved buildings. Valletta was described by UNESCO as “one of the most concentrated historic areas in the world”, where visitors can wander through winding streets to discover 320 monuments within the tiny walkable area of 0.21 square miles.

The magnificent St. John’s Co-Cathedral should be at the top of your sightseeing itinerary. Built by the Order of St. John between 1573 and 1578, it is not only Malta’s most visited church but also its most lavish. A prime example of stunning Baroque architecture, this cathedral contains two masterpieces by Caravaggio. 

Just a five-minute walk away, you’ll stumble across Lascaris War Rooms, an underground complex of tunnels and chambers that housed the War Headquarters from where the island’s defence was conducted during the Second World War. 

NATO later used the rooms, and now the dim tunnels and operations rooms have been carefully reconstructed to create an authentic wartime atmosphere and museum.

With roots planted firmly in Mediterranean and Arabic culture,e Valletta’s food and drink options are simply delicious.

Local delicacies include imqaret, deep-fried date-filled pastries, or Brungiel Mimli, roasted aubergine stuffed with mince, garlic, and mint. 

Thanks to the city’s warm 22C in March and an average of 7.3 hours of sunlight daily, you can take a pit stop from sightseeing and enjoy your tipple of choice while enjoying the spring rays.

You can even sunbathe in March, but a light jacket is recommended for the evenings; on average, there will only be three rainy days during the month, and it won’t be as busy as the summer months. 

As the days start to get much longer and sunnier, even the sea temperature starts to get warmer, with the minimum temperature going up to 15c.
