Many peony have tissue-like petals, which is why they look wonderful in bouquets. Planting and growing them gives me a real sense of achievement. The must have a spot for a herbaceous peony, where the roots can take over, and flowers burst into action each late spring into early summer.

It’s nice and easy to peony bare roots; you must first pick a spot with well-drained soil and full sun in spring and summertime. The roots need to be planted just under the surface with any eye buds showing, if they are planted too deeply then they may not flower.

:

The depth is a few centimetres, with the eye buds just poking out of the ground. The bare roots are hardy and can cope with very cold temperatures. This makes them perfect for UK garden beds and borders.

The first year we could see two or three buds and flowers, with floral displays becoming bigger and better as each year passes.

You can plant peony bare roots into pots, beds and borders with well-drained soil.

Don’t miss… [UPDATE]

The same principle of planting them in a shallow hole for best results. If planted in a pot, ensure they are positioned in full sun from early springtime to when the flowers die off. The roots will grow more established over the years and give more beautiful flowers.
