Certain motorists will have to pay up to £345 to stay on the roads due to new updates coming in less than three weeks. with VED rates up due to Retail Price Index (RPI) inflation.

The update will increase VED rates by £10 with van owners currently paying £335 per year to get behind the wheel. The increase is less dramatic than 12 months ago when prices rose by £15 from £320. Motoring experts at reminded motorists that the Government was making “significant changes to vehicle tax”

said: “In the first year of registration, cars will pay the lowest first-year rate, currently £10, and vans will pay the standard rate, currently £345.

“After that, the standard rate will be charged on the vehicle’s registration anniversary.

“Currently, this is £195 for cars and £345 for vans for the tax year 2025/26, and this increases annually in line with inflation.”

The number of vans on UK streets is understood to have increased in recent years, with data from suggesting there are as many as 4.6million licensed today.

This has doubled from the 2.3million vans which were recorded on UK roads back in 1998.

EV specialists at explained: “Yes, electric vans will also be subject to road tax from April 2025.

“Currently, light commercial EVs benefit from a zero-VED rate, but they will soon be required to pay the same standard rates as other light goods vehicles.

“This means businesses and individuals using electric vans should anticipate additional costs, though EV vans will still offer lower running costs compared to their petrol or diesel counterparts.”
