Meghan Markle’s ‘soft power move’ backfires as Duchess’ Instagram branded ‘dry’

may have returned to Instagram this year for the first time since marrying in 2018, however fans and critics alike have realised one key detail about her social media use. Since publicly launching her @meghan on January 1, The Duchess of Sussex, 43, has posted a number of posts. Each post, however, has had the comments switched off, meaning that people cannot share thoughts or opinions under the pictures published by the California-based royal.

This has been the case for both personal posts, including to , 40, as well as posts regarding her business ventures. While the duchess herself has not commented on the reason behind this, James Holton, Consumer Behaviour and Social Media Expert at , believes it’s a “classic soft power move”. However, it may actually be a disadvantage for the duchess in the long term.

He said: “Meghan turning off comments is a controlled flex and classic soft power move.

“She managed to dodge trolls but lost the UK’s chatty social DNA, which explains why her is dry even a week after the show’s release.

“People need dialogue to trust, and this approach by Meghan kills social proof.”

Since launching her in January, Meghan has uploaded 16 posts and has 2.5 million followers.

As well as posting photographs and videos about her show “With Love, Meghan” and her new brand As Ever, Meghan has also shared more insights into her Montecito life with and their two children Prince Archie, five, and Princess Lilibet, three.

This includes footage of the family making cookies with friends, and the family sharing sweet moments with Meghan’s rescue beagle Guy, who recently passed away.

Meghan also utilised her last month during ’s Invictus Games event in Canada.
