has confirmed the closure of a popular city-centre pub just days before The chain announced it will close The Spon Gate in , leaving the city with just two Wetherspoon pubs. Staff will reportedly be offered roles elsewhere within the business. A date for the closure has not yet been confirmed.

A spokesperson for Wetherspoons said: “It is a commercial decision taken by Wetherspoon. We thank all our staff and customers over the years.” The pub, named after one of the 12 gates in Coventry’s medieval wall, was a favourite among locals, with many taking to social media to express their disappointment following the announcement. One customer said: “Another bar is closing. The city is dying fast,” while a second echoed their sentiment saying, “Another pub bites the dust”.

A third customer added that it is the “only decent place in Coventry for a nice meal and good-priced drinks”.

After the closure, the city will be left with two Wetherspoons. One customer described the Spon Gate as the “best one in town”.

The announcement comes just days before another Wetherspoon, , after being sold off to Hall and Woodhouse, a brewery which owns the Lord Nelson pub nearby.

The grade-II listed building on the seafront was taken over by Spoons in 1996, and the new buyers have “ambitious plans” for the pub.

Two other Wetherspoons were recently sold after being put on the market last year, The Hain Line in St Ives and Foot of the Walk in Leith, but closure dates are yet to be confirmed.

Last month, the British Beer and Pub Association Association revealed around six pubs permanently closed every week last year, equating to a loss of 289 pubs and around 4,500 jobs across England and Wales.

could further put pressure on the industry, as employers will have to increase contributions from 13.8 percent to 15 percent, while the threshold to pay them will fall from £9,100 to £5,000.
