The music video where Britney is dressed up as a flight attendant cemented the song as being synonymous with her sultry image, and won the singer her first and only .

What many people don’t realise is that the song was actually written by Cathy Dennis, who offered it to before Britney snapped it up. After doing some digging into what was happening in Cathy’s life around the time she wrote the song, fans discovered it was written the same year as Neil Fitzpatrick broke up with her. They think this split may have inspired the lyrics about a “toxic” and “dangerous” lover.

A resurfaced tweet from PopB***h also fuelled speculation, as it stated: “The man who inspired the Britney Spears track Toxic was someone that the song’s co-writer Cathy Dennis had been dating in the early 2000s, who broke up with her in 2003: Noel Fitzpatrick. It’s unlikely you’d have known who he was at the time (unless you had a sick spaniel) but he’s better known to most people nowadays as Channel 4’s Supervet!”

Fitzpatrick, who is now a household name thanks to his show Supervet, has even been confronted about the rumour on This Morning by Holly Willoughby and .

Holly asked: “Are you who that song is written about? Is it you? Please say yes.” Noel dodged the question, joking: “You may have to ask Kylie Minogue whether I Can’t Get You Out of My Head is written about me.”

Toxic was co-written by Cathy alongside Henrik Jonback, Christian Karlsson, and Pontus Winnberg. Since the lyrics were penned, Noel has become one of the UK’s most famous vets, with celebrity clients including and Russell Brand.

His Channel 4 show Supervet has won him legions of fans, and he has been praised for his pioneering work in animal surgery.

In 2021 he touched hearts across the nation when he broke down while discussing the loss of his beloved dog.

He has alluded to the breakdown of his relationship with Cathy in his autobiography called Listening to the Animals – Becoming the Supervet, writing: “I’m sad that I couldn’t give her, or anyone else, what is needed in a healthy relationship.”
