It’s no wonder so many people have plans to move to the seaside at some point in their lives. But while the UK has plenty of stunning coastal locations to choose from, there are some that have a bit more of an edge, including one that’s been named amongst the coolest in the country.
The small town of Portrush sits on the north coast of Country Antrim, But do not let the town being small fool you. Portrush has been named by as one of the nation’s “coolest” places to live in this year – and with all that the town offers, there’s no denying that this pretty coastal town would be a great place to call home.

Portrush boasts three stunning Blue Flag rated beaches – the East Strand, West Strand and White Rocks. What makes the three beaches so special is that every one of them is completely different, providing unique experiences for those who visit.
The East Strand beach boasts some of the best waves on the north coast, which is why it is so loved by surfers. The gorgeous stretch of pristine sand is perfect to take a nice stroll along and you can then make your way to the West Strand which is only a short distance away. This family-friendly beach is great for those who would like to enjoy a picnic by sea or a bit of paddling.
Looking for a bit of adventure? White Rocks beach’s dramatic landscape of limestone cliffs, and clear waters makes it the perfect location for exploration. However, as beautiful as the beaches are, that’s not all Portrush has to give.
Along the coast you can find the Harbour Bar which serves Guinness and salt-aged rotisserie chicken and some live music to guarantee you have a good time. The town also has a number of other great spots to eat.

Shanty at The Old Lifeboat Shelter has an incredible menu, including Cooleeney cheese and seafood chowder. You can also find fresh sourdough bread and pastries at Ursa Minor Bakehouse, which won Slow Food Bakery of the Year twice from 2021 to 2024.
Boasting four stars on Tripadvisor, one person who visited the bakery said: “Absolutely delicious and huge focaccia with humous and some peanuty-chilli homemade gorgeous-ness.
“Stuffed and very tasty veggie sausage roll. Lovely coffee and very chilled atmosphere. Too full for cakes but they looked spot on.”
And after you’re done exploring the town and have filled your appeitite, a ten minute drive away from Portrush will take you to Magheracross Viewpoint – one of the best places for stargazers and Northern Light hunters in the UK.
Those who have been have raved about the “sensational views” with one person adding on Tripadvisor that it is “definitely worth a short stop”.
