A gardening expert has outlined the key jobs that people should be completing ahead of the summer months. Now is a great time to get your garden into shape with longer days ahead and warmer weather around the corner.

The winter weather may have caused damage to your garden – including your lawn, fencing and storage areas. Now James Lewis, a gardening expert from , is urging people who need professional help to book a tradesperson as soon as possible.

He said: “Spring is fast approaching, and with it better weather that will make you want to spend time in your garden. Now is the perfect time of the year to make a good start, so that by the time the sun arrives you can sit in your garden and relax, rather than be still working to fix winter issues. I’d advise using the lengthening days to get jobs done now, whether it be repairing or replacing garden tools, cleaning up debris, or checking wood for rot.”

But according to the expert, time is of the essence and it’s best to get those jobs booked in with a professional now.

He said: “It’s coming up to the busiest time of year for UK gardeners, as mid-spring typically sees more requests coming in, so if you need support then make sure you book a gardener now.

“And even if you don’t need a tradesperson, if you delay getting jobs done in the garden, you’ll be dealing with these maintenance and repair jobs, as well as the added growth of lawns and plants in spring and summer, and you won’t have time to enjoy your hard work!”

Here are five expert recommendations on what to do to get your garden in top shape for the summer.

Don’t miss… [REPORT] [REVEAL]

Repair your lawn

Experts recommend people to consider reseeding or re-turfing their lawn after winter. If re-seeding, gardeners should start by raking up leaves and debris before using an aerator to make small holes in the turf to aid drainage.

Gardeners should then use fertiliser and grass seeds to repair the damage. If there are large areas of bare patches or dead grass, then you should buy some new turf rolls.

Repair your fence

Fence posts and panels can rot over the winter due to wet ground and general cold weather. Experts recommend repairing or replacing fences if they are wobbly.

However, if they can be repaired, you should make sure you have the right tools and materials to do so. This includes the right screws, spare wood, and wood stain or treatment.

Book a professional

Gardeners are advised to contact a professional for help if a job needs an expert. However, you should consider doing so quickly.

Statistics show a trade skill shortage looks to pose a threat to our economy and the country as a whole, with 14.3% fewer workers in 2024 than in 2019. Gardeners are often in short supply as the weather improves, so get your gardener or landscaper booked before it’s too late.

Get rid of weeds

Experts are urging gardeners to get rid of weeds before they take hold in spring. Once this is done, you should add mulch to your flowerbeds.

Mulch is a layer of waste that you add on top of your plants to protect their roots. It helps keep the soil most during the final months of cold weather, preventing weeds.

Care for birds

Welcoming birds into your garden can control pests whilst also making your outdoor space friendly and relaxing. Now is a great opportunity to top up your bird feeders with foods such as peanuts and seeds.
