How to soften hard towels

Lynsey’s first tip is to stop overusing detergents. This can build up in the fibres of the towel, making them less absorbent, stiff, and sticky.

She also suggested ditching laundry powder for liquid. Washing powder can be difficult to rinse out of towels and can leave behind a residue in the fibres, making them feel stiff.

The most important tip Lynsey suggests is ditching fabric softener for .

White vinegar can effectively break down any soap residue and mineral buildup on the towel, restoring its softness.

Once your towels have been washed, give them a good shake when you remove them from the machine to help “fluff them up”.

Lastly, when drying your towels, make sure you put them on a low heat cycle in the tumble dryer.

Alternatively, if you don’t have a tumble dryer, you can hang them on a drying rack with good ventilation or outdoors on a clothesline.

If it’s a sunny day, hanging towels outside can help kill bacteria and can even brighten white towels.

Lynsey’s post received lots of comments from fans, who claimed that switching to white vinegar is a “game-changer.”

One person commented: “Great advice as usual. White vinegar is a game-changer. Also, shaking the towels before hanging out is also a game-changer.”

Another wrote: “White vinegar. Fabric softener is like adding fat to your load. It also leaves grey residue. Great tips all round.”
