Throughout the years, many sitcoms have graced the British screens, keeping viewers hooked by its recurring cast of characters who find themselves in hilarious situations. From the likes of , Porridge and Fawlty Towers, these shows have acquired masses of lifelong fans who regularly rewatch the sitcoms and own the merchandise to this day.
The Top 10 list was compiled by the British public over three months and presented by beloved talk show presenter Jonathan Ross. However, many will be surprised that 1969 favourite On The Buses didn’t make a list despite its 7/10 ranking on IMDb and its hit movie release in 1971. The hilarious sitcom followed Stan Butler (played by Reg Varney) and Jack Harper (Bob Grant) as they worked shifts on Luxton’s number 11 bus but were forced to answer to Inspector Blakey (Stephen Lewis), who was also the bane of their existence. Despite missing out on a Top 10 spot, Express.co.uk take a look at the sitcoms that did.
10. One Foot in the Grave
One Foot in the Grave is a BBC dark comedy about the trials of an elderly curmudgeon, Victor Meldrew (Richard Wilson), and his longsuffering wife, Margarette (Annette Crosbie), which premiered in 1990.

The Good Life follows middle-class couple Tom (Richard Briers) and Barbara Good (Felicity Kendal) as they turn their lives around by quitting their jobs to become farmers, much to their neighbours’ horror.

8. Open All Hours
The 1976 sitcom Open All Hours shows grocer Arkwright’s (Ronnie Barker) attempts to woo Gladys (Lynda Baron), who lives opposite his shop. However, she rejects his proposals as she has to tend to her ailing mother.

7. Porridge
Porridge ran on the BBC from 1974 to 1977 and focused on Norman Fletcher (played by Ronnie Barker) and Lennie Godber (played by Richard Beckinsale), two inmates who are serving time. The sitcom was a huge hit as it depicted different aspects of prison life.
