‘s teatime trivia show is being slammed by devoted viewers, who are up in arms over what they describe as a drop in contestant quality. Loyal fans of the long-running game show are clamouring for a shake-up in the screening process, insisting that the program should follow in the footsteps of trivia show Jeopardy! by setting higher intellectual hurdles for participants. Fans are upset over the rising trend of easy questions being left unanswered, which they feel is undercutting the show’s competitive edge as they take on some of the best quizzers in the world.

Another point of contention for fans is that the contestants often opt to play for the lowest offer, making it easier to win smaller amounts of cash. Even when faced with seemingly easy questions, players often struggle to get them right. The first player on Friday’s episode (March 14) answered his first three questions incorrectly and was booted off the show in the first 10 minutes.

Fans took to express their dismay, with one fan raging: “No!!! SEAT 2 £1,000 LOW OFFER TAKEN!!! I just absolutely cannot believe this! What on earth has happened to The Chase? Why are ITV casting these useless 0 IQ time wasters who take the stupid Low Offers? Why? This absolutely comes to a stop now! I HAVE HAD ENOUGH!!”

Another added: “Seat 1 out with all questions wrong! And a £3K Cashbuilder! What a poor contestant! Why are ITV casting people like him?”

“If you want more people going for it, stop picking the bottlers at auditions. Simple,” penned a third, while a fourth suggested: “Maybe give the contestants a little test before applying?” Her comment was jokingly responded to with: “They do. Get too many right and you’re out.”

More agreed with the concept of testing contestants before they appear on the show and setting a higher bar like they do on rival gameshow, Jeopardy!

Jeopardy’s selection process begins with an online test that covers a wide range of topics to assess potential contestants’ general knowledge.

Those who score well on the online test may be invited to attend an in-person audition, which includes another quiz, a mock game, and an interview.

Some fans joked that ITV do offer a test and pick the contestants who perform the worst to avoid giving away any money.

“Maybe they do and that’s why they got picked. Then they don’t have to give away any money,” penned one fan. Another agreed: “The current level of contestants on this series of #thechase makes me think that ITV has run out of money.”

A recent question blunder on the series saw one player sent home after his “ridiculous” guess.

Host asked: “In England, what is normally the earliest time of day a wedding ceremony can start in an Anglican church?” Offering choices of 8am, 10am, or 12pm, the contestant guessed it was at noon, explaining his choice as just a guess, adding: “Just because people need to get ready?”

The studio burst into laughter as Walsh rolled his eyes. The correct answer was revealed to be 8am, leaving the contestant absolutely gutted by his mistake.
