skipper Jac Morgan is aiming to get Matt Sherratt’s farewell party going by ending his side’s drought against on Saturday. Sherratt was brought in as stand-in head coach when Warren Gatland quit after two rounds of the and has given Welsh rugby a shot in the arm.

But the Gloucester-born Sherratt is heading back to his job at Cardiff on Monday and insists he is not in the market for the permanent Welsh gig. Wales have perked up under him, running Ireland close and nearly staging an epic comeback against Scotland before going down 35-29.

And Morgan reckons the best leaving present for Sherratt would be to bring the run of 16 defeats on the spin to an end.

Morgan said: “We are thankful for everything Matt has done – he has been great since coming in. He has given the boys energy with his attacking structure and everything like that. He has been brilliant and we just want to put in a good performance for him after what he has done. We are grateful for everything he has done the last few weeks.

“It would mean a lot to be the boys, the coaching staff and the supporters to get that win. It is international rugby, anything can happen and there is no bigger game than playing England. We know it is going to be a tough old challenge and a bit of an arm wrestle.”

The stats make horrible reading for the Welsh, They have not won a Test since 7 October 2023, when they beat Georgia in the World Cup and a 17th defeat in a row would match the worst post-war run for a top tier team, Scotland, in the 1950s.

They have also lost eight Tests in row in Cardiff, the last came in a World Cup warm-up against England in August in 2023, and defeat to Saturday would give them back-to-back wooden spoons for the first time.

Back row Aaron Wainwright said: “The coaches have been really good at coming in on a Monday, setting the stall out and starting the week fresh. We put the Scotland game to bed on Monday and started to focus on Saturday’s challenge at home. We are really looking to finish on a high.

“The losing streak isn’t something that we’ve talked to much about, but if we get the chance to put that to bed at the weekend that would be some occasion to do it on.”
