The next family dinner at the MacKinnon house might be awkward.
The Utica Comets, a minor league team affiliated with the NHL’s New Jersey Devils, announced March 13 they traded defenseman Will MacKinnon.
The trade might have been interesting only to hockey super-fans, except that the Comets general manager is Dan MacKinnon — Will’s father.
“NEWS: Will MacKinnon has been traded to the Cleveland Monsters for Future Considerations. Thanks for everything, Mack!” the Utica, New York team wrote on X.
The idea that a team parted ways with a player whose father is the general manager led to a flurry of fan reactions.
“I guess this is why you do your chores when your father asks you to,” one person joked.
“Father’s day is gonna be pretty messed up this year,” someone else quipped.
“Next time clean your room when you’re asked,” another person commented.
“Did he wreck his Dad’s car?” another fan kidded.
What makes this trade even more uncomfortable is the Comets didn’t get a player back in return. They got “future considerations,” which means another player could be sent back to Utica at some point in time.
