Passengers evacuate on wing of American Airlines plane after engine bursts into flames

Crew from the airport appeared to help passengers climb down and get away from the fire. A dozen people suffered from minor injuries

The engine of American Airlines airplane burst into flames after landing at Denver International Airport on Thursday evening. A dozen people suffered from minor injuries.

Photos and videos of the incident flooded social media, showing passengers evacuating by climbing out onto the wing of the plane with plumes of smoke rising behind them. Crew from the airport appeared to help passengers climb down and get away from the fire.

The plane was taxiing to the gate when the fire occurred in the engine of the Boeing 737-800 on American Airlines flight 1006, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said in a statement. The flight departed from the Colorado Springs Airport and was en route to Dallas when “crew reported engine vibrations,” per the FAA. It was diverted to Denver.

The government agency said it would investigate the incident.

“All passengers were safely evacuated from the plane,” the post said. The airport added that 12 people were taken to hospital with minor injuries. Airport operations are continuing as normal.
