The game was set to be decided by three penalties – the first converted by Mikel Oyarzabal before two from – until Fernandes and struck twice from open play in the closing stages.

Sociedad played the last half-hour a man down after Jon Aramburu hauled down Patrick Dorgu. And United were deserving of their victory, with Fernandes inspirational, Joshua Zirkzee razor sharp and teenage defender Ayden Heaven superb on a big night.

Here, Express Sport takes you through how each United player performed…

Man Utd player ratings vs Real Sociedad (3-4-3)

Andre Onana: 6

Quiet night for the Cameroonian as Sociedad created very little.

Noussair Mazraoui: 7

Also a peripheral figure until an excellent nutmeg and cross set up Zirkzee, who headed wide.

: 6

Came through the back of Oyarzabal and gave away an early penalty, but there was an element of misfortunate about it and he was solid enough for the rest of the game.

Ayden Heaven: 8

Looked excellent on the left of United’s back-three. Had the beating of Takefusa Kubo in a tough one-on-one battle. Was classy in possession and made a handful of really solid tackles.

Manchester United v Real Sociedad

Diogo Dalot: 7

Great back-post cross for Dorgu early on which the Dane headed off target. Caught out on his own byline in the second half which nearly led to a Sociedad goal. But salvaged an extra point for his individual rating with a smart stoppage-time finish.

Casemiro: 7 (Collyer, 78)

Influenced the game with his passing, especially balls over the top. But he almost dropped Heaven in it with a way overhit pass which was tough to control in a dicey position.

: 9

Rolled a ball across to which led to a penalty, converted both of United’s spot-kicks and then made sure he went home with the match ball by smashing into the bottom corner late on. A nearly flawless performance from the captain.

Patrick Dorgu: 7

Started poorly but turned it around brilliantly. Gave the ball away several times early on. Full of running throughout the game, won a penalty from Aritz Elustondo and and got Aramburu sent off with a run in behind.

Joshua Zirkzee: 9 (Eriksen, 88)

Perhaps his best performance in a United shirt. Great work on the left to set up a sitter for Hojlund, which was missed. Stung the fingers of Alex Remiro with a sharp effort, played the pass through to Dorgu which led to the sending off, and started a United attack with a brilliant tackle.

: 7

Lots of good work but just can’t find the net. His finishing needs urgent improvement but he won United’s first penalty, showed a few good flashes of hold-up play and produced a fantastic bit of skill to assist Dalot late in the game.

Alejandro Garnacho: 8

Brought his usual intensity, tested the keeper with a shot from outside the box, got the crowd going with a tackle high up the pitch and set up Fernandes’s third goal.
