Among her many personal interests is spotlighting the work of young carers around the world. And, as Young Carers Action Day was marked on Wednesday in the UK, a leading organisation has praised the Princess for her “wonderful and committed” support over the years.
Speaking to , CEO of Kirsty McHugh said: “The Princess Royal has been a wonderful and committed President of Carers Trust over the years. She is a regular visitor to our network of local carer organisations around the UK and has been to countless centres, meeting thousands of carers.”

Referring to the impact the Princess has, Kirsty adds: “When she visits, she always prioritises speaking to family carers themselves about the challenges they are facing in looking after ill or disabled loved ones, recognising the huge sacrifices they often have to make for their caring role.
“She is keen to talk to staff about the job they’re doing, offering some inspiring words of her own. Everyone gets a huge boost from her visits. Alongside those important visits, she has supported The Princess Royal Respite Fund For Carers which aims to raise £3m to help thousands of carers get desperately needed respite from their caring roles.
“Her support for the UK’s estimated seven million unpaid carers began in 1991 when The Princess Royal Trust for Carers was set up. In 2012, Her Royal Highness became our President following the merger of The Princess Royal Trust for Carers with Crossroads Care.”

, which was formed when The Princess Royal Trust for Carers came together with Crossroads Care in 2012, has been close to the Princess’ heart as she was closely involved in their launch.
Adding to the Princess’ reputation as being thoroughly informed and interested in everything she does, Kirsty shares a heart-warming story about the time that one young adult carer met the Princess.
She tells us: “A nervous young adult carer Holly got some comforting words from the Princess ahead of her speech at the Carers Trust’s 50th anniversary reception this year.
She said: “My speech was just before hers and I remember being so nervous, especially as I had to stand at the door to greet her as she entered the reception.

“But she was very easy to talk to and made a real point of connecting with us. She’d even heard of the village I was from. I took my mum as my plus one and they had quite a wonderful conversation too.
“She made a very strong impression on me yet put me at ease at the same time. Her speech was very inspiring too – I saw it was handwritten and her words felt genuine.
“She clearly knew so much about the charity’s work. She was calm, empathetic and warm. I really loved meeting her.”
