Ex En Vogue star Dawn Robinson has shockingly revealed she’s been living out of her car for almost three years.
The R&B sensation behind the global 20 million record-selling sensation En Vogue opened up about her homeless ordeal in an emotional YouTube video posted on Tuesday.
“For the past three – almost three years, I have been living in my car… I said it. Oh my God,” confessed the 58-year-old vocalist who enjoyed a stellar solo career before reuniting with En Vogue.
In 2020, Dawn felt the crushing need to leave the Las Vegas home she shared with her mother. Explaining her painful decision, the troubled singer stated: “I can’t deal with this. I respect her too much. I didn’t understand it. I still don’t and it hurt me. I was just trying to figure it out but I couldn’t … you can’t read someone else’s mind and you can’t figure them out.”
Her departure meant that for about a month, Dawn had to endure the sweltering heat while sleeping in her car. After her desperate situation became known, her manager stepped in, urging her to return to Los Angeles, the city she adores.

The initial hope was that Dawn would stay with her manager temporarily until she got back on her feet. However, complications arose due to their pets, as reported by Mirror US.
Despite these challenges, her manager showed steadfast support by arranging for her to stay in a hotel room that ended up being her home for an astonishing “eight months,” casting a ray of hope during her difficult journey.
Dawn, in desperate need of a new home, was offered assistance by her former boss who proposed to accompany her to view listings. Yet, his support proved unhelpful; he consistently found faults with every potential place she considered.
“I’m trying to make this easier on you because financially I know it’s got to be hard,” Dawn recalled telling him, acknowledging the financial strain of paying both rent and her hotel expenses.

Failing to find an appropriate home, Dawn became captivated by the lifestyle of those living in their cars, which she discovered online.
“There’s a whole community of people who live in their cars and a whole community of people who live in their RVs and a whole community of people who live in their vans,” she said, inspired by what she saw. “And I loved what I was seeing. I just thought, ‘Wow, these people. I could do this, I think.'”.
In 2022, Dawn took the plunge and moved into her car in Malibu. Despite a tough start, she has no regrets about her decision.
As she hones her skills in car living, such as learning how to cover her windows effectively, Dawn feels an increasing sense of freedom. She explained: “I felt free. That was a sense of freedom that I had. I was so free.”
The eight-time Grammy nominee living in her car was a choice she needed to make to “go through this fire” and she has her brother Evin, assistant Niecy, and “forever mother-in-law” to lean on.
The Free Your Mind hitmaker has been proudly filming her journey for a future documentary and envisions her eventual resurgence.
She added, “Would I have an apartment right now if I had a choice? I would. I’m not going to lie, but am I glad that I did this. Absolutely proud of what I’ve accomplished out here.”
Dawn auditioned for En Vogue in 1989 and reportedly first quit in 1997 over contract disputes before returning for stints with the group in 2005 and 2008-2011 and 2019. The group had a succession of hits including My Lovin’, Don’t Let Go and Hold On.
She was also a member of the group Lucy Pearl alongside Raphael Saadiq and Ali Shaheed Muhammed in the 2000s.
