Sometimes called currybockwurst, Volkswagen has been producing currywurst at their famous Wolfsburg factory, which has also made iconic cars including the Beetle, Golf, and Transporter, since 1973.
Whilst the food was originally made on-site to be eaten by employees at the cafeteria, Volkswagen currywurst is now sold in 11 different countries, with buyers being able to find it in supermarkets, stadiums, and even car dealerships.
Being a precision product, the sausages feature the same style of part code as any other component made in the factory and feature the phrase ‘Volkswagen Originalteil’ (‘Volkswagen Original Part’) on the skin.

Whilst demand for Volkswagen’s infamous sausages increased throughout 2024, the German company also experienced a slight increase in full-year sales revenue – increasing by more than £2 billion to £273.2 billion.
Nevertheless, the company saw a slight decrease in sales, with the number of deliveries made over the 12-month period falling by 1.4 percent to 4.8 million due to factors including a sluggish economy and strong competition.
However, despite Chinese companies posing a global threat, the country was Volkswagen’s strongest market, with nearly 2.2 million motorists in China getting behind the wheel of a new Volkswagen in 2024.
Whilst Volkswagen’s production of currywurst may take some drivers by surprise, a considerable amount of other car companies have made a range of unusual products over the years.
Alongside its extensive range of family cars and vans, Peugeot is renowned for its production of salt pepper grinders, which are often considered to be some of the best money can buy.
With production beginning in 1874, Peugeot’s grinder production predates the invention of the car by more than a decade, with the brand’s dinner table staple being renowned for their reliability and good build quality.
