Huge new £250m mega-project to end traffic chaos in major UK city

A project expected to cost up to £250 million to improve traffic chaos in Derby has been given the green light following a legal battle. National Highways said a judge has ruled in favour of works to the A38 through the East Midlands city.

The A38 dual-carriageway is vital for commuters and the local economy, running from Birmingham to Derby and through to the . Three roundabouts which currently experience heavy traffic in Derby will be upgraded as part of the plans. National Highways says the scheme aims to separate local traffic, enhancing safety, while reducing delays and making journey times more reliable.

The project is expected to improve connections for major businesses in the area like Rolls Royce, Toyota and Bombardier.

Despite the legal challenge ending, the National Highways said the plans remain subject to a Government review.

The organisation said: “The Transport Secretary has commissioned a review of the Department for Transports’ spending portfolio, including current and future road schemes. 

“While the review is ongoing, we remain committed to the scheme and are currently updating cost estimates and developing our procurement and communication strategy.”

National Highways said it is continuing to plan and prepare for the next stages of the major project, including surveys starting this month.

The survey will monitor wildfire in areas set to be impacted by the scheme.

Derby is one of the biggest cities in the East Midlands, with a population in 2023 of 266,500.

It has good links to the rest of the region – Birmingham is around 40 miles away to the south-west, while Nottingham is less than 20 miles away to the east.

The city is also close to the – one of the biggest motorways in the country – and East Midlands Airport.
