Millie Bobby Brown is glad she stood up for herself after facing backlash around her appearance.
The “Stranger Things” actor was heavily criticized online after she attended the Los Angeles premiere for her new movie “The Electric State” in February. People commended that the 21-year-old, who sported her blonde hair in an updo, looked much older than she is, some calling her “middle-aged.”
In response to the backlash, Brown screenshotted a British Vogue headline that read “No One Cares How Old You Think Millie Bobby Brown Looks” and posted it on her Instagram stories. Then, just days later, Brown posted a video that called out specific publications who bashed her looks, and in doing so, she received a lot of support from fans.
While speaking about the moment on TODAY March 11, Brown said she’s “happy that people were able to resonate with the video.”
“It’s not just for people in the industry, it’s for young girls all over the world that feel like they’re targeted or harassed at times for the way they look or the way they present themselves,” Brown, who has received a lot of scrutiny for her appearance since “Stranger Things,” said.
“I guess I just realized that if I’m not going to say it, you know, and I’m never going to find a good time to say it, then why wait and just do it now,” she continued.
After TODAY’s Savannah Guthrie called the video “courageous,” Brown revealed she shut off her phone once she posted it because she felt “a little overwhelmed.” However, once she caught up with the response, she said she expressed her gratitude for the reaction to her vulnerable video.
