A stunning European city renowned for its well-preserved medieval architecture, rich history, and vibrant cultural traditions is as pretty as Florence but without a large number of tourists. Siena, a historic city in central Italy, is one of Tuscany’s most beautiful destinations, known for its stunning Piazza del Campo, Gothic cathedral, and famous Palio horse race.

While its neighbour, Florence, is larger, and world-famous for its Renaissance art and architecture, Siena is smaller, medieval, and deeply tied to local traditions. Siena is famous for its deeply rooted traditions, especially the Contrade, or historic districts, which each have their own emblems, rivalries, and community events. The Palio di Siena is more than just a race—it is a symbol of the city’s history and pride.

Many travellers have called it as “the most beautiful city in the world”.

One of the tourists wrote on TripAdvisor forum: “First of all I have to say I have visited hundreds of cities and towns in Italy and Europe but Siena might be the most beautiful one. It is not as big as Paris or London so you won’t have this terrible traffic and it is very safe to walk around even at night.

“The church in the very center of Siena is different from any other church I have seen in Italy.

“Like everywhere in Italy, the food is delicious so is the wine. What could be more relaxing than sitting on a balcony in the old city of Siena drinking a wine of the lovely Tuscany and eating some ‘real-italian’ spaghettis?.”

The heart of Siena is Piazza del Campo, which is a shell-shaped square and one of the most beautiful in Europe. It is home to the Palazzo Pubblico (Town Hall) and the Torre del Mangia, which offers breathtaking views.

Tourists can visit Siena Cathedral (Duomo di Siena), which is a masterpiece of Italian Gothic architecture. It features intricate marble designs, stunning frescoes, and works by Michelangelo and Donatello.

Another must-visit place is Basilica of San Domenico. It is a significant religious site, housing relics of Saint Catherine of Siena, one of Italy’s most important saints.

Another one wrote on TripAdvisor forum: “Sienna is a Beautiful place to visit. Make it a must stay when away. It is so close to beautiful attractions e.g. Chianti.

“To just sit in the main square surrounded by tables and chairs, and the world of visitors wining and dining and just basking in the sun is magic. This is the main area where the annual horse race takes place.

“We stayed in May and our Hotel was just inside the big wall and overlooked the hills for miles. Little cobble stoned laneways went in all directions, amd meandered up and down hills. It is so quaint and beautiful.Well recommended as a stopover for 3-4 days relaxing between busy Italy.”
