Tucked away in the village of Barnsley lies a retreat that has recently gained recognition as the best countryside hotel in the . With an impressive score, this hidden gem is gaining traction as a must-visit weekend break in Gloucestershire.
The Pig-in the Cotswolds is a hotel that had slipped under the radar but is now coming into the limelight after an impressive win. Home to a 17th-century manor in well-heeled Barnsley, the hotel’s building marries perfectly with its serene surroundings. As a Grade II listed building, the hotel is loaded with what described as “architectural quirks”.

However, the inn has undergone recent renovations over seven months but still maintains its charm across 20 bedrooms, decked out to have a vintage feel.
It’s no wonder The Pig-in the Cotswolds won the award, as it boasts a spectacular three and a half acres of arts and crafts-style , designed by the renowned horticulturalist Rosemary Verey, whose clients have included and
The hotel was once home to the artist for over 50 years and was formerly known as Barnsley House. It appears as though the layout and borders of the space are mostly the way she left them, and guests are able to wander around and explore them at their leisure.
Amongst nature are hidden gems, including a space for wellbeing treatments you can find tucked away in the gardens, known as the Fieldhouse.
The treatments available include bespoke massages, facials, hand and foot treatments, muscle wraps and scrubs, helping guests unwind in nature.
The idea of bringing the natural elements into guests’ stays is interwoven throughout every detail, including what’s on the menu.
Everything served from the Pig-In’s restaurant is driven by the garden, working alongside teams who “sow, grow and create” their seasonal dishes.
The Pig-Ins states they’ve got “an obsessive commitment to home-grown and local produce: simple food done well”.
While also claiming that “anything we cannot grow ourselves, we source from our local supplier friends here in the Cotswolds”.

This hidden gem is just that, hidden, amongst the beauty of the Cotswolds with very little in the village, except for a local pub.
Although, on its doorstep is Chichester with a wide range of shops, markets and museums for guests to discover.

Eating in the restaurant won’t set you back far, with mains starting at £18.
