Nyo explained: “From April 1 of this year, cars emitting over 255g/km of CO2 will be required to pay an additional £2,745 to use the road.
“This will push first-year VED costs to a staggering £5,490 annually for some, marking a significant hit for drivers nationwide.
“With many people’s car tax increasing next month, it can be confusing about how much you will start paying.”

Vehicles emitting between 226 and 255g/km of CO2 will also see fees double with prices increasing from £2,340 to £4,680.
Models producing anywhere from 191 to 225g/km of CO2 will pay £3,300 in 2025 compared with just £1,650 last year,

Cinch said: “Those buying new cars – especially cars that produce a lot of CO2 emissions – also need to watch out for those increasing first-year road tax rates.
“Increasing first-year road tax rates are another tick in the ‘pro’ column for used cars, but keep an eye out for the expensive car supplement if the used car you’re looking at cost over £40,000 new and is less than six years old.
