Nationwide Building Society has clarified its rules after a customer raised a question about their direct debits.
The person contacted the group as they had received their replacement bank card, after their old one expired at the end of February. They asked if they need to change their direct debit details for their account as “the last four digits have changed”.
Advice on the Nationwide explains that if your debit card is expiring, Nationwide should send you a new card about four weeks before the current card expires. You can use the new card as soon as it arrives.
Responding to the customer’s query, the provider said: “You don’t need to change over your direct debits nor any recurring card payments as a result of card renewal.”
You can view your direct debits or standing orders online using the banking app or internet bank. To check our recurring card payments, you will need to call Nationwide or visit a branch, using your debit or credit card as a form of ID.
If your debit card isn’t working, there are several things you may want to check that could be causing the issue. It may be there aren’t enough funds in your account to make the payment.
In this case, you may want to check if your available balance is different from your account balance – the available balance may well be lower because you have pending payments which have yet to go out of your account.
Information on the Nationwide website : “When you use a debit card to pay for something, it reduces the available balance in your current account.
“Similarly, when you use a credit card to pay for something, it increases your available balance. This is because the money has been reserved, ready for the company to take.”
Another reason your debit card may not be working is because there’s a problem with the card machine or cash machine you are using to make the payment, in which case you may want to try a different shop or cash machine.
If you are trying to make a contactless payment, it may be that this function is not working, in which case you can trying using Chip and PIN.
You can only pay up to £100 using contactless payment under UK banking rules. You may also need to pay using Chip and PIN when using a contactless card for the first time.
Don’t miss…
You may also be unable to make a payment because your PIN has been locked. Nationwide will lock your PIN if it has been entered incorrectly three times.
Even without your PIN, you can still access cash and make some payments. You can visit a branch to access these services, as along as you have some ID, such as a passport or driving licence.
To unlock your PIN, you will have to visit a cash machine. You have to insert your card, enter your PIN, select ‘other’ and then ‘PIN services’ and choose ‘PIN unlock’.
The screen should then display ‘successful’ and your PIN will be unlocked. Customers cannot use their card reader to unlock their PIN.
If you have forgotten your PIN, you can request a new one, which will be posted to you within three to five working days.
Once you have the new PIN, you have to use a cash machine or make a Chip and PIN purchase to get your PIN up and running again.
