New snow maps flash purple as Britain hit by 2cm an hour blast – full list of areas

The UK could be hit by a huge barrage next week with the latest flashing white and purple. On March 19, , snow is expected to fall in the Scottish Highlands, the Central Belt, north-west England, the West Midlands, and most of Wales, according to the latest maps from WXCharts.

Areas around Manchester could see 3cm of snow, as could high peaks in Scotland. Elsewhere, the snow will be more of a dusting. Nevertheless the wintery downpours could arrive as far south as Cardiff. The ‘s long-range forecast concedes that the week starting March 17 will see a “transition to unsettled conditions, with Atlantic weather systems bringing wind and rain at times”.

Despite mixed forecasts regarding March 19, there could be wintery weather coming even sooner. The predicts that this week could see snowfall and plunging temperatures.

Chris Bulmer, Deputy Chief Meteorologist at the , explains that Brits should brace for “much colder air following from the north”.

He added to expect “wintry showers across the north and the east of the UK”, but added that “accumulations of snow are likely to be largely restricted to hills”.

The weather expert said: “While there is uncertainty in the extent of rain and wintry showers through the middle of next week, there is higher confidence that below average temperatures will continue through the week, bringing a very different feel to the mild weather over the weekend.”

Today:

Fog patches slowly clearing eastern areas this morning. Cloud and outbreaks of rain moving across Scotland through the day, with strengthening winds. Largely dry and cloudy elsewhere, with a few scattered showers in parts of England and Wales.

Tonight:

Cloudy in the south with patchy rain. Clear spells and showers elsewhere, wintry across parts of the north. A patchy frost developing in central and northern areas with brisk winds.

Tuesday:

Early cloud and rain clears the south. Sunny spells and showers follow, turning wintry over the hills in Scotland and northern England. Feeling colder than of late.

Outlook for Wednesday to Friday:

Rather cloudy, although brighter spells are likely at times. Scattered showers continuing to spread across the country with sleet and snow over northern hills. Cold with overnight frosts and ice.
