 is celebrating his 61st birthday today after a successful year for the royal.

The King’s younger brother is set to mark the day with some of his nearest and dearest, despite the fact his wife, Duchess Sophie, is expected to be flying out to New York for royal work.

The Duke of Edinburgh is likely to spend the day at his Bagshot Park home in Surrey instead.

His birthday comes just weeks after his  marking a huge milestone for the duchess.

Prince Edward is the youngest child of the late Prince Philip and the late Queen Elizabeth II

Prince Edward is the youngest child of the late Prince Philip and the late Queen Elizabeth II. Antony Richard Louis was born on March 10, 1964 at 8.20pm, weighing just 5lbs 7oz. , it was the first birth that Prince Phillip had attended with his wife. He was their fourth child.

Prince Edward had a special bond with his mother

Prince Edward was known to have a particularly close bond with his mother the late Queen. It is believed the pair shared a lot in common, including a love of horses and the great outdoors. It is also believed that the late Queen managed to spend more time with Edward in his younger years than she did his siblings, as she had managed to find a good balance between parenting and being a monarch.

The prince married Duchess Sophie in 1999

The prince married Duchess Sophie in 1999. The couple had been dating for years beforehand, with Sophie having been working in PR at the time. On their wedding day, the couple  at St George’s Chapel in Windsor. Prince Edward is the only one of the late Queen’s children to not have divorced.

Prince Edward is a full-time working royal

Prince Edward is a full-time working royal and supports young people by promoting the benefits of non-formal education across the world such as the Duke of Edinburgh award. The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award has been a focus of The Duke of Edinburgh’s life and work for four decades since achieving his own Gold Award in 1986. The award was founded by his father Prince Philip in 1956. The Duke is also passionate about the arts and works with organisations that help young people to develop their skills through theatre and music.

Edward is a doting dad to his two children

Prince Edward is also a doting dad to his two children, Lady Louise and James, Earl of Wessex. In a speech for his 60th birthday last year, his wife Duchess Sophie praised Edward as a father. She said: “He is the best of fathers, the most loving of husbands and still is my best friend.” The duke is believed to have a good relationship with both of his children.
