A breathtaking waterfall near a beautiful Welsh village has been likened to those on the tropical island of Bali in Indonesia. Hendrydh Falls is recognised as the tallest waterfall in south , with its waters cascading down 90ft (27m) in the Nant Llech river valley of Brecon Beacons National Park.
The nearest village is Coelbren and lies just outside the national park’s southern boundary. Topping a list of 10 places in Britain that look like they’re abroad, Hendrydh Falls’ “lush, wooded” gorge makes it “just like” the popular Nungnung and Tegenungan waterfalls on Bali, according to the publication.
However, it warns visitors to the waterfall, in the Welsh county of Powys, to take boots and waterproofs rather than swimwear.

Batman fans may recognise the falls as the place where the caped crusader’s lair was filmed for The Dark Knight Rises, starring Christian Bale, who can be seen in the film vanishing behind the water to get to his bat cave.
The National Trust describes the falls as a “natural wonder” that is “well worth a visit.” The Trust recommends a walk to Graig Llech Wood.
This is a “tranquil” spot and a “haven” for plants and wildlife, with opportunities to see tree creepers, warblers, wrens and woodpeckers.
Dippers and wagtails can also be seen hunting insects on the river as well, according to the Trust.
The falls are on a geological fault line on the river and feature a hard sandstone lip known as Farewell Rock, so called because coal miners digging down to the layer would say “farewell” because there wasn’t much chance of finding coal underneath it.

In the 19th century geologist William Logan found two fossilised trees at the base of the falls. These can still be seen at Swansea Museum today.
There is a range of accommodation in the area surrounding the falls, ranging from holiday apartments to hotels.
Cedar Leaf & Sage sleeps up to eight people, Breconview Lodge can accommodate two and Waterfall Country Escape has room for up to 15.
Coelbren is about half an hour by car from Merthyr Tydfil on the A465. You can also get there by bus from Merthyr Tydfil, on a T4 for Builth Wells changing at Brecon for a T6 towards Swansea.
