We’ve entered a newish era in automotive sales when consumers, thanks to some frosty trade relations with our southern neighbour, are considering buying Canadian whenever possible. For used Honda CR-V buyers that’s good news, because since its launch it’s been built in Alliston Ontario. Yes, in later years it moved some production to the US, but that was due to overwhelming demand for this versatile hauler. Depending on the source, CR-V stands for either Comfortable Runabout Vehicle or Compact Recreational Vehicle. This review will cover the fifth generation; 2017-2022, before the introduction of a gasoline-electric hybrid power-train.

Problems in Used 2017-2022 Honda CR-V
One of the more commonly reported concerns related to fuel injectors which continued to leak fuel when they were off, leading to a rich running condition. If left unrepaired, this could easily damage the catalytic convertor. When checking a used CR-V, pull the engine oil dipstick and check for the smell of fuel. Honda also seems to have an overly sensitive on-board diagnostic system which can light up every dash icon for a simple discharged battery.
2017-2022 Honda CR-V reliability
Hondas are legendary for their reliability and lifespan and the CR-V is no exception. Their version of a continuously variable transmission is known for years of trouble-free driving and a big part of the reason the CR-V delivers outstanding highway fuel economy (7.2L/100km). Keep these maintained and rust-proofed and you’ll easily exceed 10 years or 250K km.
2017-2022 Honda CR-V recall history
The 2017 model has six recalls to its name, for faults such as failing fuel pump, fuel leaks and defective seat belts. 2018 model CR-V has four recalls for the same reason. The 2019 Honda CR-V was recalled seven times including one for loose bolts that can lead to the rear subframe detaching itself from the car. Not many units were affected however. The 2020 model has eight recalls to its name, including a serious one for airbags that deploy unintentionally in a crash. The 2021 model year CR-V too was affected by this recall. The 2022 models were recalled five times, including one for failing driveshafts.
Which used Honda CR-V should you buy?
Unless you carry a front-seat passenger who can’t use a manually adjustable seat, stick with any of the lower AWD trims over the top-line Touring to save a bundle on purchase costs.
