Often, the build-up of hair, soap scum, and body oils can create a perfect storm for bathroom odours that linger far too long, no matter how clean the rest of the room is. While most advice leans heavily on the old and solution, there’s a surprisingly simple and inexpensive fix that doesn’t involve either.

According to Brian Toward, a home improvement and  expert at Wholesale Domestic, a humble kitchen ingredient could be the answer. In fact, his method to banish  smells is so budget-friendly that it costs as little as 30p from most retailers, including Tesco and Sainsbury’s.

“Typically most advice would be to include the usual mix of baking soda and vinegar,” Brian explained.

“[However], a more unknown yet highly effective method is using citrus peels, particularly oranges or lemons.”

The secret lies in the natural oils found in citrus peels, which help break down grease while leaving behind a subtle, fresh fragrance.

“By placing thinly sliced peels directly into the drain and running hot water, the natural oils help to break down grease while leaving a fresh, subtle fragrance behind,” Brian explained.

This simple approach freshens your bathroom and is perfect for your kitchen drains. But it doesn’t end there, as Brian had another maintenance tip to keep drains smelling fresh between cleans.

He said: “To help avoid the smells altogether, you can regularly pour a cup of warm salt solution down the drain.

“Salt acts as a gentle abrasive, dislodging any build-up, while also being an eco-friendly way to combat bacteria growth.”

So, before you reach for those costly commercial drain cleaners or pour pungent vinegar down the sink, try this 30p method and see the results yourself.
