Wooden provide a charming and practical boundary around a and complement the natural landscape. The organic material, whether painted in soft, neutral tones or left untreated for a more rustic look, is versatile enough to suit old cottage and contemporary spaces.

While wooden fences can last for years with minimal upkeep, such as occasional treatments to preserve their longevity, can occasionally find its way onto the slats. This is especially common in damp, shaded areas, as the unsightly green stain thrives in such environments. Fortunately, there are to tackle this issue without resorting to pressure washers, which can sometimes damage the wood.

Suburb Pressure washing

Sharing advice online, an East Coast Fencing expert said that removing layers of “slimy, green film” starts by simply brushing it off.

First, wear protective gloves and eyewear to shield yourself from debris or cleaning agents.

Then, begin the cleaning process by gently brushing off the loose algae with a soft brush or broom. “Avoid using a hard-bristled brush as this could damage the wood’s surface”, said the fencing expert.

They continued: “Next, prepare a cleaning solution by mixing one part white vinegar to two parts water. This natural solution is effective against algae without harming your garden plants.”

Distilled white vinegar is generally considered the best choice as it is the purest form of white vinegar and won’t leave any colouring agents behind on the surface you’re cleaning; however, depending on the severity of the algae, you may also consider using “horticultural-grade” vinegar which has a higher acetic acid concentration for tougher algae removal.

Use a sponge or spray bottle to apply the vinegar solution to the affected areas and leave it for about 15 minutes. Stubborn algae deposits may need to be scrubbed again with a soft brush.

Finally, rinse the panels thoroughly with water using a garden hose.

Vinegar is good for algae because its acidic nature effectively kills and removes algae growth. The acetic acid in vinegar disrupts the cell structure of algae, causing it to die off.

If you don’t have white vinegar, boiling water is another remedy. The fencing experts suggested pouring boiling water directly onto the algae can kill it.

However, care should be taken to avoid burns and to ensure the hot water does not damage plant roots or beneficial insects in the vicinity.

As you can see, the benefits of removing algae swiftly go beyond just keeping your fencing looking good. “While green algae may not pose any serious risks to one’s health, it can make the fence look unattractive and even adversely affect the wood by retaining moisture, causing rot, and weakening the fence’s structure”, said East Coast Fencing.

A long-term solution to prevent green algae from returning to your fence posts is to ensure they remain as dry as possible.

This may seem challenging, especially in the UK’s damp climate, but the experts suggest that reducing moisture can “make a significant difference”.

First, trim back any overhanging branches or plants to increase sunlight exposure and improve air circulation around the fence. Both sunlight and air flow are natural deterrents to algae growth.

A waterproof sealant can be applied to the wood to create a barrier against moisture. For regular maintenance, gently washing the fence with a hose and inspecting it for early signs of algae formation will also be beneficial.
