Horror as man dies after plunging from crane after ‘unauthorised access’

A man has tragically died after breaking into a building site, climbing a construction crane and falling from a “significant height”. The North West Ambulance Service told the Daily Express they were called at 3.04pm on Tuesday to the construction site Manchester Science Park, in Hulme, to reports a man had “fallen from a crane.”

Building site contractor firm Willmott Dixon revealed the man was not a worker – but instead had broken into the site and tried to climb their towering crane. Despite efforts the man, whose injuries are not known but he reportedly also suffered a cardiac arrest, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The coroner has been informed and a joint investigation is now underway as to why he entered the site and how he climbed and fell from the construction crane.

Willmott Dixon, the main contractor of the development at Manchester Science Park, have confirmed a member of the public “gained unauthorised access” before the fatal incident.

A Willmott Dixon spokesman said: “We can confirm that an incident took place on our site on Greenheys Lane at Manchester Science Park this afternoon, 4 March, involving a member of the public who gained unauthorised access.

“The site is now closed, and the project team are cooperating fully with the emergency services as they investigate the incident.

“Our thoughts are with the person’s family at this difficult time, and we will also offer full support to our people and supply chain members on site given the tragic situation that has occurred this afternoon.”

Greater Manchester Police and paramedics were called to the incident on Greenheys Lane in Hulme at 3.04pm on Tuesday March 4th.

An air ambulance was also scrambled to the scene before the building site was taped off by police. Forensics in white suits also attended the scene to conduct investigations throughout the afternoon,.

NWAS told us: “We were called at 3.04pm to a report of someone falling from a crane. There was an ambulance a d response vehicle and air ambulance attended.”

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police added: “It’s believed that a man has fallen from a significant height, and suffered a cardiac arrest.

“Despite the best efforts of those at the scene, the man has been pronounced deceased. A scene remains in place whilst we respond.”
