will be able to fix one of their biggest problems at the end of the season without making a dent in their transfer budget. The west Londoners have experienced a dip in form since the turn of the year, resulting in them dropping out of the title race. They have only managed three wins in 2025 and now face a battle to secure qualification next season.

One of ‘s biggest problem areas has been in goal, with Robert Sanchez failing to impress over the course of the campaign. He has been responsible for five errors leading to goals conceded, the most of any Premier League player except Ipswich Town goalkeeper Arijanet Muric, who has made the same number of mistakes.

Sanchez has already been deposed as ‘s first-choice stopper, with Filip Jorgensen playing in their last four league games. However, the Blues could have another ready-made solution in Djordje Petrovic, who has been impressing on loan at Strasbourg.

Petrovic has been enjoying a purple patch over in France, having kept five clean sheets in his last five appearances. He has been solid between the sticks and will be hoping for an opportunity to impress when he returns to Stamford Bridge in the summer.

The 25-year-old was allowed to leave on loan due to concerns over his distribution, with ‘s style placing emphasis on building from the back. However, it seems clear that Petrovic has improved in this area during his time at Strasbourg.

He boasts a passing accuracy rate of 79.4 per cent, an increase on the 76.4 per cent he managed at last season. He has also seen more of the ball at Strasbourg, making an average of 47.1 passes per game compared to 30.7 with the Blues.

Petrovic’s inspired form has earned high praise from Strasbourg boss Liam Rosenior, who labelled him as ‘world class’ after he pulled off a string of fine saves against Lille back in January.

“We have seen huge progress from Petro,” said Rosenior. “He is a world-class goalkeeper. We see it every day and it is still paying off today.”

Following their recent win over Auxerre, Rosenior added: “Petrovic is getting better by the day. It’s very important in our game system. He is only 25 years old and will become a great player.”

Only time will tell if Petrovic is given the chance to earn a starting spot for next season, having proven his worth at Strasbourg. Even if he is given a back-up role, some impressive displays could give Maresca food for thought when it comes to selecting his first-choice stopper.
