Neighbours soap icon says the pay was ‘very good’ – but it was ‘too late’ for him

One star has spilled the beans on what kind of money the soap’s actors receive. Ian Smith, who took on the role of beloved , was one of the show’s longest-serving stars – with him appearing in more than 2,100 episodes over five decades. He originally joined the cast in 1987.

Now, speaking to the Guardian, he has shared some of the perks of the job as he explained he was in a “privileged position”. He told the publication: “I saw so many good actors come and go – but they always go. My father had instilled in me to never walk away from money.”

He continued: “And the money was very good. To be in work, I learned, is a privileged position. And to be in permanent work, with holidays for Christmas, is fantastic.”

However, the 86-year-old star said that he thought he had been “typecast” which limited his chances of landing other roles. Ian explained: “It was too late. I had been on the show too long.

“I would love to play something outlandish, like a vampire or a serial killer. But all the people in casting today were brought up with Harold – one even told me that was the reason I was being typecast.”

Over his 27 year stint, Ian left briefly in 1991 but returned again in 1996, before exiting again 2009 before coming back in 2011 and 2015. He then left fans thrilled as he made a surprise return in 2022 as a series regular.

Ian decided to quit the show for good after returning in 2022. It came following a devastating diagnosis of terminal cancer.
