Start mowing lawn

Once your lawn begins to grow in spring, it’s time to dust off the mower and start cutting. Mowing helps promote healthy growth and keeps your lawn looking neat and tidy.

Start by mowing the grass on a higher setting to avoid cutting too much in one go.

Only mow when the grass is dry, as wet conditions can lead to uneven cutting. Gradually reduce the cutting height over time, ensuring you don’t remove too much of the grass blade, which can stress the lawn.

Regular mowing during spring ensures a thick, vibrant lawn come summer.

Plant summer flowering bulbs and early potatoes

Spring is the time to start planting those summer flowering bulbs that will brighten your garden in the coming months.

Choose varieties that thrive in your garden’s conditions and plant them at the recommended depth for the best results.

Popular summer flowers such as lilies, dahlias, and gladiolus can be planted now for a burst of colour later in the season.

It’s also the perfect time to plant early potatoes. Choose a sunny, well-drained spot, and plant your seed potatoes about 10-15cm deep. With a little care, you’ll be enjoying your homegrown spuds in no time.

Sow tomatoes, chillies, sweet peppers, and aubergines indoors

Spring is the ideal time to start sowing seeds for heat-loving plants like tomatoes, chillies, sweet peppers, and aubergines.

Start these seeds indoors or in a greenhouse to give them a head start before they’re ready to be planted outside.

Sow the seeds in pots or trays, ensuring they’re in a warm, sunny location.

Keep the compost moist but not waterlogged, and once the seedlings have developed strong roots, they can be transferred into larger pots or your garden beds when the weather warms.
