In April 1992, the Princess Royal’s divorce from Mark Philips was finalised, and a few months later, in December, she remarried Sir Tim in Scotland, which permitted the marriage of divorcees, unlike the Church of England. Their wedding marked a change for a different approach towards marriage. A few decades later, the late Queen’s sister, Princess Margaret, could not marry Captain Peter Townsend because he was a divorcé.
