Amorim was quizzed on Keane’s comments in his press conference on Friday and made it clear that he did not agree with the former United midfielder. He insisted that Fernandes will continue to receive his backing because he has proven himself as a hugely important member of the squad.

He said: “I heard about that but I have a different opinion. Bruno is really important for us in the club, especially for me. He is playing well in a difficult context, he wants always the responsibility. I know as a captain he does things sometimes with his arms, criticising the teammates. Most of all it is a bit of frustration.

” has big standards from his time and it’s normal to have an opinion. I have an opposite opinion. I think my opinion is more important than because I am the coach, and I think he [Fernandes] is doing things quite well.”

Fernandes inspired United’s comeback from two goals down to salvage a draw at Everton last weekend. A few days later, he was involved in all three goals as the Red Devils edged past Ipswich despite being a man down, with Patrick Dorgu being shown a red card before the interval.

Speaking after the final whistle against the Tractor Boys, Fernandes urged his team-mates to keep working hard and trust the process under Amorim as they look to end their dire Premier League campaign on a positive note.

“We know that we have to stick to what we’ve been trying to do in training [and] what we’re supposed to do,” told .

“It could be that you could feel in moments that it’s not working, but for some reason, the manager wants us to do that. They watch so many games, they prepare themselves [for our matches]. We have so many staff, not only the ones who came with him but the ones who were already here.

“We have great people behind the team to work on that, so if they do that in the right way, we just have to come on the pitch and show it. As I said, we need to have more confidence [and] be more brave to show our character and our qualities.”
