Nationwide issues statement as payment delays hit customers on pay day

Nationwide Building Society customers have reported issues with making transfers and payments today (February 28), affecting some employees on their pay day.

Several people contacted the group over social media to report issues with the app and delays in incoming and outgoing amounts.

One person said on X at around 7.45am that the banking app was “not updating” and it had been on and off all morning.

They also said were unable to make payments with their card. They said: “I’ve moved money and it’s not updating in the app. Need to pay my bills.

“Sometimes I log in and it shows my bank balance as last updated yesterday. Almost thought I didn’t get paid! What’s going on?”

Another person said their account balance was “not updating”, saying they had tried transferring bills money to an account with another provider but “it’s not updated”.

Other customers said they were having issues transferring their wages to another provider, with one person warning that “this happens constantly”.

Nationwide issued this response to several of the customers, with one of the latest replies at around 9am: “We’re sorry, some incoming and outgoing payments are delayed at the moment. They are in a queue and will arrive as soon as possible. Everything else is working normally.”

Responding to a person who said they couldn’t access their accounts to pay their bills, Nationwide said at around 8.25am: “Some account information may not be displaying online at the moment. We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as we can.”

An update on the Nationwide website reads: “Some incoming and outgoing payments are delayed at the moment.”

The update assures that you can still send money but it “won’t go through straight away”, while direct debits and standing orders are “working normally”.

You should also still be able to use all these functions:

  • Move money between accounts
  • Use your cards online and in shops
  • Log-in to our Internet Bank and Banking app
  • Withdraw money at cash machines.
