English fashion designer Sarah Burton designed the custom-made Alexander McQueen Welsh double-breasted coat with a peak lapel and flap pockets. Reports suggest that the bespoke piece would be worth around £3,500 as similar designs retail at this price. However, the exact value is unclear, given that Princess Kate’s design is bespoke.
Princess Kate has worn the coat a handful of several times for public engagements. She was first spotted wearing it in 2020 to launch the ‘Hold Still’ outdoor photography exhibition in London.
Before her trip to Wales, she was last seen in it at her ‘Together At Christmas’ Carol Service, which was held back in December. Alexander McQueen is a favourite of Princess Kate’s and likely has a special place in her heart as the label created her wedding gown in 2012.
If you want to recreate Princess Kate’s red coat look on a budget, we’ve rounded up a few alternatives below.
Red Petite Double Breasted Military Coat by Roman, now £70 (Image: Roman)
Our cheapest alternative is the Military jacket from Roman, which features a double-breasted button detail similar to Princess Kate’s.
Despite being the same colour as Princess Kate’s, it has a slightly shorter cut. However, that doesn’t take away from the overall smart and polished look. If red isn’t your colour, there are also black, navy, khaki, and grey versions.
The Miss Selfridge belted wrap formal coat is £74.99 (Image: ASOS)
If you want to replicate the long-line structure of Princess Kate’s coat, the Wrap Formal coat by Miss Selfridge, available from Asos, offers a similar silhouette.
The button detail is also very similar to Kate’s, but the structure of this coat, thanks to the tie-belt, will nip you in at the waist. The coat comes in ten colours, including black, khaki, and chocolate.
The NastyGal Double Breasted Coat is now £97 and available at Debenhams (Image: Debenhams )
Debenhams had discounted this double-breasted red coat by the brand NastyGal.
The cut of the coat is oversized which offers a more contemporary and relaxed style. However, the lapel detail gives it a structured look similar to Princess Kate’s.
The oversized Red Double Breasted Wool Blend Coat is now £130 after being reduced from £299 (Image: Nobody’s Child )
Nobdoy’s Child, a brand which Princess Kate, and have all been photographed wearing, is currently offering a lovely pillar box red coat at a discounted price.
Usually retailing for £229, the coat is discounted by £100 to £130 at the time of writing. Much like Princess Kate’s Alexander McQueen coat, it is double-breasted, made from wool and has an almost identical black button detail. There is also a tartan version available too.
