In fact Pamela Murdock at explains that all whiffs and pongs – such as those caused by pets or smoking – can all plummet your car’s resale price.
She said: “Odours caused by dampness, pets, or smoking can significantly impact your car’s resale value, as dealers will need to assess how suitable the vehicle is for resale.
“Air fresheners often fall short when it comes to masking odours, especially smoke, which can embed itself in the car’s fabric and climate control system.”

However, experts have revealed five natural hacks which can prevent the dreaded car stink, including coffee grounds.

Coffee grounds
Although some of us sip a coffee on the morning run but leaving a paper bag of grounds in your car overnight can absorb bad smells as they can soak up hydrogen sulphide gas which can be found in cigarette smoke and emissions from gasoline.
Activated charcoal
Another low-effort solution is to place pieces of charcoal in a shallow dish and leave them in your overnight. Charcoal acts as a natural deodoriser, effectively trapping and neutralising bad smells.
This multi-tasker can be sprinkled and left for 15 minutes on fabric surfaces like car seats and floor mats to help remove odours from food, pets, and spills. However, use with caution as it can damage leather upholstery.

Apple cider vinegar
To clean your air vents, mix one part vinegar with two parts warm water and use a cotton cloth. While you have the bottle out, a small amount of apple cider vinegar can be poured into a shallow bowl and left in your car overnight to help eliminate odours.
Essential oils
A few drops of essential oils can be put on a cotton ball in your cup holder or doors, or onto a wooden clothes peg and clipped onto an air vent which could circulate the smell. However, avoid essential oils with sedating properties like valerian or carrot seed.
