Five ways to make your kitchen work better

Here are a few suggestions to help with reorganization

Whether you’re planning a new kitchen or trying to manage with a cluttered existing one, there are simple ways to better organize your countertops and create a cooking and entertaining space that’s both functional and tidy.

“The secret to a clutter-free kitchen is creating dedicated spaces for everything,” advises Rebecca Foster, principal and lead designer at Align Interior Design.

“Sometimes, it’s the small changes that make the biggest impact. Installing a spice pullout inside an existing cabinet instantly clears your counters of jars, while keeping them organized and within reach.”

Here are a few suggestions to help with reorganization.

Seamless style

A seemingly obvious planning feature, but one that can be overlooked, is the integration of the microwave into cabinetry. This could be done as a retrofit, but would require a cabinet that could accommodate a microwave and either new fronts or open shelving. Foster notes that when every item has a home, the counters feel fresh and inviting. “Taking the time to think through these details up front can save you years of frustration and create a kitchen that truly works for you,” she says.

Keep it together

Create a purposeful spot on the counter for something you use every day. Foster suggests “using a stylish tray to group items like a coffee setup or your favourite cookbooks; it transforms everyday essentials into a curated display that feels intentional and polished, not cluttered.”

Roll with it

Appliance garages aren’t a new concept, but Ikea has put its own spin on this functional feature, which easily incorporates into a smaller footprint. The space-saving Tittebo roller-door cabinet minimizes intrusion onto the countertop.

Maximize the functionality of cabinetry with pullout shelves or drawers. These are desirable in new kitchens, but can easily be retrofitted, like these from Home Depot, in an existing kitchen. “Adding pullout shelves, a recycling unit, or a paper towel holder inside existing cabinets gives your kitchen a functional upgrade without the cost of a renovation,” Foster says.

Custom fit

Drawers can be overlooked when it comes to kitchen organization, with utensils scattered on top of one another. Expandable drawer organizers allow for some customization for different types of tools, like the bamboo gadget and flatware trays from Crate & Barrel.
