Volvo teases all-electric ES90 sedan with 700-km range

The upcoming EV, set to be revealed March 5, wears a curious split-taillight treatment, with LEDs flanking the rear window

  • Volvo early September teased a new all-electric sedan (or liftback) called the “ES90”
  • In February 2025, the automaker dropped even more teasers—and promises of a 700-km range
  • There were strong hints, too, about the upcoming EX60, supposedly a two-row crossover

UPDATE February 26, 2025: As the ES90’s reveal date – March 5, 2025 – draws nearer, the frequency of teasers dropped by Volvo has been ramping up. Late February, those teasers included a host of new images—and a promise of a battery range of about 700 km (435 miles). Starting with the latter, Volvo’s latest press release on the ES90 says its 800-volt architecture gives it some rather long legs, as well as the ability to recharge at a rate of 300 kilometres of range in just 10 minutes plugged in. (Requisite 350-kW fast-charging stations sold separately.)

Now to the new teaser images, as seen in the adjacent gallery. They’re mostly of what we already expected: a sleek roofline, a protrusion for lidar just above the windshield, and, from what we can divine, Volvo’s trademark “Thor’s hammer” LED headlights. It’s out back where things get interesting, with a set of C-shaped taillights in the usual place, and then some more LEDs up high, on either side of the rear window. What!? We’re not quite sure what Volvo’s up to with those, but we’re curious to find out. Our original story from September 2024 continues unchanged below. —Ed.

Furthering the range (pun firmly intended) are strong hints about the upcoming EX60, likely to take the form of an all-electric two-row crossover occupying roughly the same footprint as the very popular XC60. Deputy CEO Björn Annwall is quoted as saying the model will serve as a ‘huge boost’ to the brand’s EV ambitions. When it appears, it will likely be a big piece of the product puzzle not just in terms of sales, but also in terms of its platform which is likely to be shared with a raft of other EVs.
