Kate Hudson admits she regrets declining the role of Andrea Sachs (Image: Getty)
star Kate Hudson, best known for her breakout performances in Almost Famous and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, recently opened up about a decision she still considers a major career misstep—declining the role of Andrea Sachs in the 2006 fashion-centric blockbuster, The Devil Wears Prada.
During a revealing interview with Capital FM, Hudson shared her regret, admitting: “The Devil Wears Prada. That was a bad call.”
This coveted role, which Anne Hathaway ultimately filled, was not on the cards for Hudson due to scheduling conflicts with her 2006 comedy, You, Me and Dupree.
Reflecting on the clash, Hudson shared: “And it was a timing thing, and I couldn’t do it. I should have made it happen and I didn’t.” After watching the film, her feelings of missing out were palpable: “That was one, when I saw [the film] I was like, ‘ugh’. But again, everything happens for a reason.”
The Devil Wears Prada, shot in 2005, not only elevated the careers of its cast but also set trends in the fashion and film industries.

The film portrays the gruelling yet glamorous life of an aspiring journalist, Andy Sachs, as she navigates the high-stakes world of fashion under the stern eye of Miranda Priestly, a role immortalized by Meryl Streep.
While Hathaway’s portrayal received widespread acclaim, she was surprisingly the ninth choice for the part, as the film’s director David Frankel revealed.
Frankel’s revelations about the casting process unveiled a who’s who of actresses who were initially considered for the role. “We started negotiating with Annie [Hathaway] to make a deal, and that didn’t go well with the studio… We offered it to Rachel McAdams three times,” he told Entertainment Weekly. McAdams, fresh off her successes in The Notebook and Mean Girls, passed on the role, as did other prominent actresses such as Scarlett Johansson, Kirsten Dunst, and Natalie Portman.
It wasn’t until Meryl Streep, who played the iconic fashion magazine editor, advocated for Hathaway that she was seriously considered.

This decision proved pivotal as The Devil Wears Prada went on to become a critical and commercial success and even spawned a Broadway and West End musical adaptation, with American actress Vanessa Williams currently lighting up the stage as Miranda Priestly on the West End in London.
A sequel to the 2006 hit film is officially in the works at Disney, according to .
Meryl Streep will reportedly return as Runway editor Miranda Priestly, alongside Emily Blunt, who played her long-suffering assistant in the original film.
At this time, Anne Hathaway is not confirmed to reprise her role as Andy Sachs, although the film’s original producer Wendy Finerman and screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna are both returning.
The storyline reportedly follows Priestly as she navigates her career amid the decline of traditional magazine publishing and faces off against Blunt’s character, now a high-powered executive for a luxury group with advertising dollars that Priestly desperately needs.
