A Vancouver man is facing charges after a bizarre set of circumstances in which he was arrested twice for intoxication on Sunday in Port Moody, once driving nearly two and a half times the speed limit.
Port Moody officers were called out to a disturbance as a wedding wrapped up at about 1:45 a.m. in the Moody Centre area of the city.
Police allege Good Samaritans took car keys away from an intoxicated man who indicated he was going to drive home.
After his keys were taken away, officers say he became agitated, causing a disturbance and triggering the call to police.
Attending officers arrested the man for breach of peace as a preventive measure then transported him home to his Vancouver residence with the understanding he would retrieve his parked vehicle much later once sober, according to police.
At around 3:50 a.m., officers spotted a vehicle excessively speeding at 123 km/h in front of the Port Moody Police station in the 3000-block of St Johns Street, in a 50 km/h speed zone.
Police stopped the vehicle, and realized the driver was the same impaired man who had been transported home by police hours earlier.
Police say he told officers he used a ride share to get back to Port Moody to drive his vehicle home.
The 29-year-old driver was arrested for impaired driving and was held in police custody until sober.
He faces charges under the Motor Vehicle Act, a driving ban, and a vehicle impoundment. Additionally, a high-risk driving report has been filed with Road Safety B.C.
