Now that spring is almost here, ants and other critters are more likely to enter your home, but there is a simple way to prevent these unwanted pests.

often appear in March as many ant colonies are beginning to reproduce, which can lead to swarms of  entering  in search of food.

Katie Wells, the founder of , has explained that baking soda and sugar are easy ways to stop ants from entering your home.

She said: “Mix equal parts baking soda and powdered sugar and place it in a lid near where you think the ants are coming in.

“The powdered sugar will attract them, but since they are unable to differentiate between the sugar and the baking soda, they will carry both back to their nest.”

When ants eat baking soda, it reacts to the acid inside their stomachs, causing a buildup of gas that eventually ruptures.

Sugar is used as bait to trick the ants into eating the baking soda as they will think it is food and carry it back to their colony, which will help eliminate a potential infestation.

Baking soda will not work immediately, as the ants need to consume it, but once they take it back to their nest, it is a simple way to prevent ants from being a nuisance this spring.

What is fantastic about this method is that it is cheap to make and natural, so you do not need to buy a bug spray filled with chemicals to get rid of ants in your home.

All you need to do is mix equal parts baking soda and sugar into a small bowl and place the mixture where you have seen the ants.

It is best to place it near your door or outside where an ant trail may be to encourage as many ants as possible to eat the bait.

If you are putting the mixture in your garden, be aware that baking soda can dry out plants. To make cleaning up easier, place it on a piece of cardboard or paper.

Then, all you need to do is leave the mixture for the ants to find. You will have to wait for the ants to eat it and then take it back to their colony, so have patience.

Over time, more ants in the nest should eat the solution and eventually die, so you should notice far fewer ants after a couple of days.

However, be aware that it could take up to a week for the ants to share the food and for the baking soda to harm them but it is a natural way to keep large swarms of ants away from your home.
