Former world darts champion Adrian Lewis has joked that he thought twice about making a comeback after learning that could be involved in the punditry.

Lewis, who secured Alexandra Palace glory in 2011 and 2012, recently confirmed that he would be returning to darts after a lengthy hiatus.

The man from Stoke-on-Trent lost his tour card in 2024 due to inactivity, having decided against taking part in the PDPA World Championship qualifiers.

He is now eyeing a long-awaited return to the oche at the Modus Super Series, where his former mentor Taylor will be on punditry duties.

Reflecting on the moment he found out that Taylor would be involved, Lewis told : “When I heard he was doing the punditry, I thought [it would] put me off for a couple more years until he retires fully.

“I’m used to him slagging me off anyway when I’m playing darts, so you know nothing will change there.”

Lewis was Taylor’s protege during his younger years and they went on to have a number of memorable meetings, including in Grand Slam, World Matchplay and Masters finals.

They also teamed up to represent England at the World Cup of Darts, winning the trophy on four occasions.

Lewis also joked that he could emulate Peter Wright by wearing a wig on stage when he makes his comeback at the Modus Super Series in the spring.

“Jason [Thame] asked me [about] going back last year, I think it was, and I wasn’t quite ready,” he explained. “Now I’m getting there, hopefully setting a date. I think it’s around May time, so looking forward to it.

“I’m enjoying throwing again in patches, only when I’m playing well. I think they only want me on there for a bit of friction. Hopefully I’ll ruffle a few feathers and have a laugh. I think I might wear one of those Peter Wright wigs when I’m playing.”

Lewis, who is regarded as one of the best players of his generation, was then asked to give his thoughts on the current crop of PDC stars.

He suggested that Chris Dobey could be a dark horse to win the next World Darts Championship while also throwing Stephen Bunting’s name into the ring.

“It wouldn’t surprise me,” said Lewis. “He’s got a cracking attitude on him, he’s very consistent. Why not? I think the two Lukes are going to take some stopping, mind. But anybody outside of that, even Bunting, has got a fantastic chance as well.”
